Homemade Superfood Granola
My family is big on starting the day off with "good for you " food. I always have a glass jar full of this delicious granola ready. This recipe makes best vegan, gluten free and eggless granola which also is free of artificial preservatives and colors.
The best part of this recipe is it's versatility. You can add or skip many ingredients per your taste preferences. You can also adjust the quantity.
Kids Favorite Granola
Both my kiddos are trail mix / granola fans. They not only enjoy it for breakfast but also for afternoon snack or delish dessert.
So we were always trying and experimenting with different types of store bought granola over years. Once I read through ingredients and decided to make it at home with simple tweaks, it became our family favorite recipe. Btw, that's what food blogger mommas do !
Why you will love this recipe
The best part of making breakfast cereal at home is that you avoid all artificial preservatives and freshness retaining ingredients that are prevalent in almost all the store bought granola boxes. Instead you feed your body clean and nourishing superfood ingredients.
You also can make endless adjustments to suit your taste. Don't like sweet taste - reduce the sweetener, love cinnamon ? - add a few extra dashes ... you get the idea.
So use this recipe as a base and make your own. Let us know in the comments what changes you made.
Healthy, simple, and totally delicious, this recipe is guaranteed to become your family favorite. I also have a Savory Pumpkin Seeds Trail Mix and Savory Rice Krispies Trail Mix- Chivda recipes if you like things sweet and savory.
Serving Suggestions
This delicious cereal like granola can be enjoyed on its own. My kids love it with some almond milk or yogurt and some chopped fresh fruit on top. You can also add it to a yogurt parfait or use it as a topping on the ice cream sundae.
For a lazy weekend brunch, I often serve this granola with other delicious breakfast spreads. Indian Spiced Masala Chai or Turmeric Latte for the drink, Savory Multigrain Waffles, Sweet Potato Hash , Savory Chia Oats Bowl or Tofu Scramble are our favorite menu items along with Mishti Doi - Caramelized Yogurt.
Pro Tips
Always store your granola in an airtight container at room temperature. It lasts for up to a week. Since there are no added preservatives, if you will use it longer than a week, move it to the refrigerator.
Let it cool before eating. Your homemade granola will continue to crisp up as it cools. If you let it rest for 15 minutes on the sheet pan, it’ll be extra crisp and toasty – totally worth the wait!
Homemade granola makes wonderful holiday gift. Pack it in recycled old mason jars. Tie a beautiful ribbon around the lid. Add a personal note card and gift away ! I get tons of praises and compliments when I send these granola gifts to teachers, friends and co-workers. You can also use it as a hostess gift.
Ingredients:
Exact measurements are listed in the recipe card below. Here's what you need and can substitute to make this easy recipe. You can also make a big batch and double or triple this recipe.
Old-fashioned oats - rolled oats : If making this recipe gluten-free, be sure to double-check that the brand you buy is certified GF.
Nuts: Walnuts are my favorite superfood in homemade granola. You can also use other nuts including slivered almonds, pecans or cashews. You can skip them if you want to make it nut-free.
Seeds : Pumpkin seeds are power packed superfood. I like to add them for their impressive nutritional profile. You can also sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and flaxseeds.
Melted coconut oil: The earthy flavors of Coconut oil taste well. It also helps in binding the ingredients together.
Sweetener: Maple syrup is the best sweetener. It also helps keep granola moist and clumpy. You can also use agave nectar, brown sugar syrup or honey. Brown sugar powder or coconut palm sugar will also work. For sugar free option, choose stevia.
Flavors : Ground cinnamon and sea salt is the classic granola flavoring. Feel free to use vanilla extract as well.
Want to customize your granola ? Here are some impressive add on
Dried fruit: Chopped dried fruit is a great addition. Roughly chop them before adding. Dates, raisins, dried figs, apricots, apples or berries are all delicious.
Spice mixes: For this recipe, I am keeping it super simple by using just the ground cinnamon for flavoring. There are however several other warming spices you can add. Ground nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, cloves and ginger are great options. You can also use spice mixes like Chai Spice, Pumpkin Spice or Gingerbread spice for that festive gourmet seasonal touch to this recipe.
Coconut Flakes: Another great addition to the cereal mix. Make sure to add it in after you finish baking the granola in the oven to avoid it burning while baking.
Chocolate Chips : Can never go wrong with chocolate chips in granola. All kinds of chocolate chips can be used based on your favorites. Chocolate Shavings or roughly chopped chocolate chunks also work. You can also use cacao powder.
How to Make
Best of all, this sweet breakfast granola is super easy to make! Gather all the dry ingredients, drizzle in the wet ingredients, and mix it all together. Bake on low 275 degree Fahrenheit temperature for 30 minutes. Be dazzled by the warm earthy aroma as it bakes ( yes that's an added bonus) and your delicious granola is ready !
How to make Granola in Air Fryer
You can also make granola using the air fryer. Instead of heating up the whole oven, I prefer to use air fryer especially during summer months. You should use perforated parchment paper to cover the air fryer basket so the oats and nuts don't slip through the wire basket.
Instant Pot Vortex AirFryer as well as Cuisinart Toaster Oven/ Airfryer combo has big basket which is perfect for making granola. Also since food burns quickly, use lesser temperature setting than the oven. Detailed instructions are included in the recipe card below.
