WHAT IS CHIVDA ?
"Chivda” is a popular savory tea time Indian snack. You can call this recipe Chivada ( chiwada) , namkin, snack mix, trail mix , savory granola, masala snack treat... what's in the name afterall.. it is the amazing taste folks !!
This healthy Namkeen Recipe is a perfect tea time snack. You can also serve it in gatherings like diwali party, kitty party or office pot luck. This also is a perfect after school snacks for kids.
Savory trail mix uses all pantry items that I almost always have stocked up so I can make this at a moment’s notice.
This trail mix is so incredibly delicious, it's a must have for my tea meet ups with friends. I often keep it ready for last minute hunger pangs especially in the early evenings.
Savory granola mix is perfect for breakfast or for a crunchy delicious snack in the afternoon. You can also use it as a topping on salads, Oatmeal or pancakes as well.
MIX AND MATCH INGREDIENTS
This no fuss recipe is easy to make. You can mix and match to your liking. If you don't have any of the seeds, replace it with what you have or just skip.
Same goes for curry leaves. I love lightly fried crisp curry leaves. But of can not easily find them, you can do without them too. None of the ingredients soak up the oil like traditional poha or oats, so you don't need much of oil either.
I often buy Pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds hoping to eat them as snack. However, just eating them plain can be boring.
That's when the idea to make them into chivda like snack mix came to my mind. I mixed it with typical Indian tadka, added some sweet, spicy and tangy flavors and voila!!
Instead of grabbing the junk snacks , this is much better option. And since it tastes so wonderful, you won't miss out or feel deprived either.
My mom used to make this type of snack to munch on along with masala chai. Back then, us sisters used to hull the pumpkin seeds one by one by hand. It was such a delicious treat we used to love doing it.
Now we get hulled pumpkin seeds in bulk at most grocery stores including Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. Same goes for hulled sunflower seeds.
HEALTHY SNACK
I crave something savory with my morning and evening chai. I have noticed that if nothing healthy is easily available, I end up eating chips or farsan which isn't good.
So having something like this namkeen mix fills that void. On it's own you won't eat these seeds as your first choice. Make them savory, salty and spicy and you will finish the bowl in time..I am sure of it !
As they say, " taste bhi - health bhi " .. ( it is healthy and tasty) truly defines this chivda mix.
GREAT FOR GIFTING
This scrumptious trail mix makes wonderful gift. Pack it in small decorative goodie bags , attach a beautiful tag and gift it. I often do it during Diwali and Christmas holidays.
You can also use it as hostess gift. I often receive a recipe request as well as rave compliments for this unique , off-beat recipe.
