While we were enjoying scrumptious Asian cuisine in Singapore, something on many restaurant offerings caught my eye: “Spicy Edamame“. My family and I felt instant connection to it when we saw it on the menu, so we ordered it. We totally had one of those drool worthy WOW moment when a beautiful plate of spicy edamame arrived at our table.
It was a perfectly awesome mix of shelled edamame drizzled with soy sauce, chili paste and garlic. What a cool concept we thought! With this version of Chili Garlic Edamame, the spices on the outside of the pod are delivered to your tongue before you bite on the inside bean.
So the taste is spicy and tangy. And it is super tempting. You can’t just stop eating it.
Pro Tips
I am sure you really will fall in love with the spicy seasoning coated outside on the shells of the edamame. But PLEASE (pretty please) Do NOT eat the outer pod. It is really, really chewy. It’s very difficult to swallow that shell. So just taste the seasoning and eat the inside beans. One at a time please 🙂
And when you serve this as a snack, don’t forget to provide other bowl to put the discarded shells especially when you are entertaining guests at party!
Edamame beans are very high in fiber and plant based protein. So they are perfect for guilt-free plant based snack.
Ingredients
- Frozen Edamame in shells – look for them in freezer section near Asian vegetables. Boil or steam your edamame pods until they’re tender, about 3-4 minutes. You want them just a bit firm, not mushy. Drain them and set aside.
- Seasoning : Creating the perfect spicy edamame begins with the sauce. Mix up some sesame oil, a touch of sriracha, with minced garlic, liquid coconut amino ( or tamari or soy sauce) . Adjust the spice level to your liking.
- Garnishes : toasted or plain sesame seeds and salt ( I prefer sea salt crystals )
How to Make Spicy Edamame
In a small fry pan on medium low heat add the sesame oil. Once oil heats up, add minced garlic. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until a golden brown, do not burn. Remove pan from heat and cool.
In a medium bowl mix together the sautéed garlic and chili sauce.
Steam edamame in a microwave safe bowl for 3 minutes. Add the warmed edamame to the garlic chili sauce and toss to coat. The sauce clings to the pods, infusing them with that irresistible taste.
Season with sesame seeds and sea salt. Serve warm.

Spicy edamame makes a fantastic appetizer, but don’t stop there. It’s a versatile side dish that pairs well with sushi, ramen, or rice dishes.

Should I use Shelled or Un-shelled Edamame
You’ll find two varieties of edamame — shelled and unshelled. They will be typically stocked in frozen vegetables section. For snacking purposes, stick with the unshelled variety, where the beans are still in the pod.
Shelled beans are good to add in fried rice and pasta as bulking agent. Since frozen edamame is already cooked, it just needs a few minutes to reheat. These edamame can be served hot, warm, at room temperature, or even chilled.
