Ingredients
Crescent Roll Dough: I am using store bought Crescent roll dough. Substitute with puff pastry for a flakier texture, or use pre-made pizza dough for a denser option.
Cheese : Mozzarella Cheese is my favorite since it gives a nice cheese pull when you pull pieces out. You can string cheese or cheese stick as well. Experiment with Gruyere, Swiss, or pepper jack for different flavor profiles. Vegan? Opt for dairy-free cheese alternatives.
Minced Garlic : Gives this pull apart bread nice umami savory taste. You can use garlic powder as well.
Italian Seasoning : The layers of flavor make it so delectable.
Butter and Herbs : Drizzling melted butter with garlic and herbs over the freshly baked bread adds incredible taste. Use rosemary, parsley or basil. Don’t skip it.
How to Make
Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven according to the crescent roll package instructions. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Cut the mozzarella cheese sticks into 6 pieces.
Unroll the Crescent Rolls: Carefully unroll the crescent roll dough onto the flat surface. You can cut each triangle in the half (lengthwise) if you want to make smaller bread balls.
Stuff and roll : Roll the piece of cut string cheese in minced garlic and Italian seasoning. Place it in the middle of the triangle. Then the fold the dough around the cheese to make a ball. Repeat the process to make all the balls.
Arrange it in Christmas tree shape : Start off with a bottom base line of 5 balls. Then move on top by placing one less ball in each next layer. Work your way up the tree in the order of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Place 2 balls in the middle of the base line and two more balls below them to make a tree stem.
Create garlic butter mixture : In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, minced garlic, Italian seasoning and parmesan cheese. Using a pastry brush, brush the entire surface of the Christmas tree with the garlic butter mixture.
Bake to Perfection: Follow the baking instructions on the crescent roll package, usually baking at 375°F (190°C) for 10-12 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Serve and Enjoy: Once out of the oven, transfer your Christmas tree pull-apart bread to a serving platter. Pair it with marinara sauce for dipping. Garnish it with fresh herbs, more parmesan cheese. Serve and enjoy!
Options / Variations
- Savory Delight: Replace the cheese with your favorite savory cheeses like Gruyere, Parmesan, or feta. Incorporate sun-dried tomatoes or olives for an extra burst of flavor.
- Sweet Indulgence: Swap the cheese and herbs for a sweet filling: cinnamon, sugar, and chopped nuts. Add a layer of cream cheese or Nutella for a creamy texture. Drizzle with a simple glaze made from powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla after baking.
- Spicy Kick: Mix in finely chopped jalapeños or green chilies for a spicy kick. Use pepper jack cheese or a blend of spicy cheeses. Serve with a side of salsa or a spicy aioli for dipping.
- Dipping Sauces: Serve with an array of dipping sauces like marinara, pesto, garlic aioli, or even a cranberry sauce for a festive touch. Spinach dip or ranch dressing also tastes amazing !

I haven’t even tried the recipe and I’d give it a 5! Its a great idea for your Christmas lunch or dinner. Suggestion: glaze the top of the rolls with ‘egg wash’ to get that beautiful tan(beat an egg and spread with brush before putting it in the oven)
