What is Nutella Christmas Tree?
The Nutella Puff Pastry Christmas Tree is crafted by layering sheets of flaky puff pastry with a generous spread of Nutella hazelnut chocolate spread. The pastry is then carefully cut and twisted into a Christmas tree shape, creating a visually appealing dessert. After baking to golden-brown perfection, the Nutella Puff Pastry Christmas Tree is often dusted with powdered sugar. It makes a delicious centerpiece for holiday gatherings.
Ingredients
Puff Pastry: Store bought Puff pastry serves as the buttery and flaky foundation of the Christmas tree. If puff pastry is unavailable, crescent roll dough can be a suitable substitute, although the texture may differ slightly.
Nutella : Nutella, a smooth blend of hazelnuts and chocolate, provides a rich and indulgent filling. For those with nut allergies or seeking an alternative flavor, various chocolate spreads or fruit preserves can be substituted. Alternatively, a homemade chocolate ganache made from melted chocolate and cream offers a customizable and equally decadent option.
Optional Garnishes : Brushing melted butter on the top adds nice golden crust. Powdered sugar adds a sweet and decorative touch to the finished Christmas tree. You can also drizzle some honey or maple syrup for earthy taste.
How To Make
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) . Prepare baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Roll out one puff pastry sheet into a large rectangle on a lightly floured surface and place on the prepared baking sheet . Spread chocolate-hazelnut spread over the rolled pastry in a thin layer with the back of a spoon. Roll out the second sheet of puff pastry and place on top of the first one. Press down lightly so they stick together.
Carefully trace the shape of the triangle with wide base. Lightly score 2 lines down the middle of the triangle. Cut slits on both sides of the triangle spacing them about 1-inch apart. Make sure to leave few inches in the center intact. Twist each strip of pastry twice, pressing the ends into the baking sheet.
Cut out few star shapes with the leftover pastry. Place the star on the top of the tree. Brush the melted butter on top, if using. Bake in the preheated oven until puffy and golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes.
Once it's done, take it out from the oven . Let it cool slightly. Then dust the powdered sugar over the top. Transfer it to serving platter, serve and enjoy !
The best way to serve it is like a pull apart dessert, where you pull each branch and devour ! Serve it with creamy sweet dip for extra indulgent touch!
How to Make Nutella Christmas Tree in Air Fryer
If you want to make this Christmas Tree pastry in the air fryer, make sure to adjust the shape of the tree to fit the air fryer basket. If you have toaster oven combo, you can use full baking sheet size. Otherwise, you may have to make the smaller tree.
Prepare the tree as listed above. Air Fry it at 350°F (177°C) until puffy and golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Serve with dusting icing sugar as described above.
Make Ahead Option
To save time, you can prepare the Nutella Puff Pastry Christmas Tree in advance. Assemble the tree, cover it tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate it overnight. When ready to bake, simply take it out and bake according to the instructions.
Pro Tips
While cutting the shape of the tree, try to keep the branches at least 1" thick. Thicker branches are easier to hold together and twist. Use ruler for marking! Use sharp knife.
Slightly warm the Nutella by placing the bottle in the warm water. It will spread easily without ripping the puff pastry. I prefer to use back of the tablespoon for spreading.
Besides Nutella, you can use peanut butter, almond butter, fruit preserve, seed butter ( for nut-free option) , caramel sauce, cookie butter, lemon curd or even marshmallow fluff as a spread. I also love Biscoff spread 😍
Serving Suggestions
Enhance the overall dessert experience by serving this Dessert Tree with complementary treats at Christmas parties. Fresh berries like strawberries and raspberries, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or a drizzle of chocolate sauce will make it even more prettier.
