Fun Family Activity
Beautifully wrapped gift bags of chocolate dipped pretzels look super fancy and are loved by all. And it's SO easy to make them ! Even kids can do them.
Early December, right after Thanksgiving, we do a fun family project of making these HOLIDAY PRETZELS. Kids absolutely enjoy helping out in making big batches while munching along. After all, when there is smoothly melted chocolate involved , who wouldn't want to get dippin , right?
Also this recipe makes a big batch of roughly 90+ pretzels. You can scale it higher or lower depending on your need. I do not recommend keeping the melted chocolate since it hardens quickly and tempering it again is not ideal.
Easy To change per festival
The basic recipe to make chocolate pretzels is straightforward and simple. The colorful topping can be changed according to moods and the season. You can use combination of purple, orange, black sprinkle to make Halloween party pretzels. Or use pink and red sprinkles for lovely Valentine's Day pretzels.. imagine and create my friends.
We also love them as a snack to enjoy during the super bowl like game watching and kiddos love them as after school treat. You will also love that this foolproof recipe makes delightful munchies without candy thermometer or other fancy gadgets.
HOW TO STORE CHOCOLATE DIPPED PRETZELS
Store these chocolate covered pretzel rods in air tight container in dry condition at room temperature. Keep them away from direct sunlight and heat source. Well stored pretzels can stay fresh and taste great up to a month. So make a big batch in one go and enjoy them as you fancy.
WHAT TYPE OF CHOCOLATE IS BEST FOR MELTING?
If cost is not a concern, Couverture chocolate is ideal for melting. The high fat content in these chocolate gives smooth and shiny finish.
For home projects and to save the bucks, I prefer to use chocolate chips ( the ones you use for cookies) for easy and smooth melt. You can also use candy melts or baking chocolate barks. Both white or dark chocolate works in this recipe.
If you notice that the chocolate isn't sticking too well, use a tablespoon of coconut oil or shortening while melting. It will give that smooth texture. I have also noticed that dark chocolate melts smoothly compare to white chocolate.
Easy To Customize
I am using three different types of chocolate chips for dipping. But this recipe can easily be customized to your likings. You can use any pretzels you want. I recommend large pretzel rods or twists since they are faster to make. They also look great in gift packages. To make this recipe gluten free choose certified Gluten free Pretzels.
TOPPINGS SUGGESTIONS
- Chopped nuts ( think peanuts... yum )
- colorful sprinkles
- coconut flakes
- holiday colored M&M's
- I make a few with flaky sea salt topping for extra salty crunch.
- A contrasting color ( dark vs. white ) or a caramel drizzle makes it look like 'Pro' style.
HOW TO USE INSTANT POT TO MAKE CHOCOLATE DIPPED PRETZELS
If you plan on making a large batch, I highly recommend you use InstantPot or a crock pot for keeping the melted chocolate warm without overheating. Here's how I do it.
- Put the Instant Pot in SAUTE mode . In the main steel insert, put a trivet and pour 4 - 6 cups of water. Pour the chocolate chips into the mason jars with wide mouth. ( I use recycled salsa bottles)
- Once water starts boiling, cancel SAUTE. Put the chocolate chip filled jars on the trivet. Using a wooden spatula, stir the mixture few times.
- Press KEEP WARM button so the water stays warm for extended period of time and chocolate stays melted without overheating or burning. If you feel chocolate is starting to harden, press SAUTE again for few minutes. Make sure the water doesn't get into the chocolate melt.
- Hold a pretzel rod by one end and dip it into the chocolate, leaving an inch or two uncovered. ( You may have to tilt the mason jar if the length of the rods is bigger than mason jar)
- Lay it flat on prepared baking sheet. Make sure to leave some space in between two. Lightly sprinkle each pretzel rod with sprinkles. Repeat with remaining chocolate and pretzels.
- Place the baking sheet with pretzels in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes to set the chocolate. Carefully remove the rods from the baking tray. Store in dry air tight container.
- Chocolate-Covered Pretzels will keep well for up to several weeks in an airtight container at room temperature.
