Recipe Inspiration
Years ago, when we were staying in International Village, we were friends with a wonderful Polish neighbor. We used to have Progressive dinner Parties and learn and devour international cuisine. My neighbor’s mom made us this unforgettable cabbage pasta dish. It was so simple yet so luscious and comforting, I had to seek the recipe and know all about it.
So this recipe is adaptation of Mama Jolanta’s classic creation. I also recreated it using electric pressure cooker like Instant Pot to make it easy and quick. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Ingredients
Exact measurements are listed in the recipe card below. Here’s what goes in this recipe
- Cabbage, onions and green peas
- Pasta – I used gluten free rotini
- Seasoning – I used low sodium vegetable broth and all purpose seasoning mix along with salt and ground black pepper. You can use water instead of broth. Onion and garlic powder, celery salt and flavoring bullion cubes can also be used.
- Butter or Oil
- Optional Garnishes – fresh herbs like flat leaf parsley, basil or chives minced, Red pepper flakes, grated Parmesan cheese, fresh lemon juice
How to Make Instant Pot Haluski
Press SAUTE on the Instant Pot, and when it reads Hot, add butter. Once it melts, add chopped onion and cabbage. Sprinkle some salt and cook until onions are slightly soft.
Hit CANCEL, and use some of the water to deglaze pot, if necessary
Add the pasta, broth and the seasoning. Give it a quick stir. The broth won’t cover the pasta, but this is fine.
Place the lid on the pressure cooker. Vent is in the Sealing position. Press MANUAL or PRESSURE COOK for 4 minutes. Pot will take a few minutes to reach pressure, then begin cooking.
When Instant Pot finishes cooking, wait to keep warm timer for 5 minutes then release leftover pressure by moving the valve from SEALING to VENTING.
When the pin drops, open the lid.
Using a fork, gently stir everything together. Pasta will soften and cook as you mix them with the liquid from the pot.
Hit SAUTE and cook for 1 or 2 minutes to help reduce extra liquid if needed.
Scoop the pasta into a serving bowl or platter, and serve with garnishes as desired. Enjoy !
Pro Tips
You can use whatever sort of pasta you like, you may just need to adjust cooking times accordingly. Egg noodles, chickpea flour pasta or gnocchi also can be used.
If you want to make this recipe oil/ butter free, simply skip the butter. Just use water or broth to get started with sautéing the veggies.
Traditional dish has meat in it. You could use 1cup of diced pancetta, sliced kielbasa, bacon or ham while sautéing the onions and cabbage.
You can also use cauliflower gnocchi for a lower-carb option.
If you would like to add other vegetables like carrots, celery or bell peppers, add them with the peas and pasta for even cooking.
I am suggesting several non traditional garnishes to amp up the flavors. Choose one or many depending on what you like.
Delicious Cabbage Recipes
Since we are only using half the cabbage head to make this recipe, here are other delicious cabbage recipes to use the leftovers. Stuffed Cabbage Stew, Turmeric Cabbage and Peas Stir Fry ( Patta Gobhi ) , Vegan Eggroll in a Bowl, Instant Pot Buttered Cabbage and Cabbage Steaks with Chimichurri Sauce are all easy cabbage recipes with a stellar taste.
I always chop up the whole head of cabbage at once and keep leftovers in a Ziploc bag lined with a paper towel and tightly sealed in the refrigerator. This does help tremendously in meal prep.
Storage and Re-heating
You can store fried cabbages and noodles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
You can also freeze Haluski pasta for up to 3 months in an airtight container. Pasta does get mushy when you freeze it. ( so I prefer to eat it freshly made )
Haluski can be reheated on the stovetop or microwave with 1-2 tablespoons of water. You can also reheat in the oven by putting in a baking dish at 325 degrees Fahrenheit until warmed through.
FAQs
This vegetarian haluski recipe is easy to make vegan. Simply use plant based vegan butter or cooking oil instead of dairy butter. Rest of the ingredients are all vegan.
Choose certified gluten free pasta to replace regular egg noodles or flour pasta. This is how I make it too. Any store brought glute free pasta can be substituted.
