Ingredients
Cabbage: A leafy green cruciferous vegetable with a mild flavor and crunchy texture, cabbage is rich in vitamins and fiber. It’s the star ingredient of this dish, providing bulk and substance. You can use green or white cabbage. Avoid soft cabbage types such as Napa and savoy cabbage. You can also use red cabbage.
Vegetable Broth : I prefer to use low-sodium vegetable broth. You can also use water but broth adds so much more savory flavor. Chicken broth also works well.
Butter : Use either salted or unsalted butter. Use plant based butter if you want to make it vegan buttered cabbage. Adjust the salt if you use salted butter.
Seasoning ( optional) : I prefer to use all purpose seasoning along with salt and black pepper. You can use garlic powder, onion powder and smoked paprika or red pepper for additional flavors.
How to Make Instant Pot Cabbage
Put the cabbage on the cutting board. Cut the base and remove the core and outer leaves. Then slice the cabbage in half and further into about 1.5″ cubes. Add to the Instant Pot.
Add the butter, vegetable broth and seasoning if using. Sprinkle salt and ground black pepper. Using the spoon press down the cabbage some.
Close the lid and set the vent to SEALING. Select the PRESSURE COOK/MANUAL setting and set the cooking time for 4 minutes at high pressure. The Instant Pot will take around 10 minutes to come to pressure and start cooking.
After it’s done cooking, quickly release the pressure and carefully remove the lid. Stir and sauté the cabbage to make sure that the butter and seasonings are evenly distributed. Adjust the seasoning, if needed. Serve warm. Enjoy !
Storage
Refrigeration: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It should be consumed within 3-4 days for optimal freshness and flavor. Allow it to cool completely before storing it in the refrigerator.
Reheating: When reheating buttered cabbage, it’s best to do so on the stovetop over low to medium heat. This helps prevent the cabbage from becoming mushy and preserves its texture.
Freezing: While buttered cabbage can be frozen, it may experience some changes in texture upon thawing. If freezing, transfer the cooled cabbage to a freezer-safe container or bag. Consume frozen buttered cabbage within 1-2 months for the best quality.
