Ingredients
Mushrooms: I use baby Bella or cremini mushrooms. You can use any variety of your choice including portbellos . Mushrooms contribute a rich and savory umami flavor. When sautéed, they develop a deep, earthy taste. You can also use Air fryer mushrooms, grilled mushrooms or stir fried mushrooms.
Bread : You can use any sliced bread. Use whole wheat bread for wholesome meal. Choose a good-quality bread that can hold up to grilling without becoming soggy. I prefer Sourdough or artisan bread. Again, no fuss. Use whichever bread or buns you have.
Cheese : The melted cheese adds a creamy and gooey texture to the sandwich. I love grated Mozzarella as it melts into a gooey, stretchy texture and Monterey Jack cheese for complements the earthiness of mushrooms and adds a subtle creaminess. Cheddar cheese also works.
Seasoning : Garlic salt and black pepper is all you need.
Butter : Melted butter adds nice golden crisp on the toast as we grill the sandwich. Olive oil is good substitute.
Optional Ingredients : Dijon mustard is great option for additional flavor. You can also drizzle balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, caramelized onions, and other marinades for additional flavors.
How to Make
Prepare Mushrooms : In a pan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture and become golden brown. Season with garlic salt and black pepper. You can also air fry sliced mushrooms at 375 F for 15 minutes.
Assemble Sandwiches: Take 2 slices of bread and spread melted butter on them. Divide the sautéed mushroom mixture evenly among these slices. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the mushrooms.
Top and Grill: Place the remaining 2 slices of bread on top to make sandwiches. Spread a bit of butter on the outer sides of each sandwich.
Grill or Toast: Heat a pan or griddle over medium heat. Brush some butter over it. Place the sandwiches on it and cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted. Flip the sandwiches and cook the other side until it's also golden brown.
If you want to Make Grilled Mushroom Sandwich in Air Fryer : Put the prepared sandwiches on the air fryer basket. Air fry at 350 F for 8-10 minutes until it is golden brown from outside.
