I don’t think I’ve ever come across anything as versatile as Hasselback potatoes. They are unbelievably delicious and can be served as a main or a side dish. You can also use them for mid afternoon snack or delicious dessert.

Whether you’re on the hunt for an appetizer for the next party you’re hosting, or are just looking to try your hands at something in the kitchen, these Hasselback sweet potatoes are just perfect!

Accordion style cut sweet potatoes roasted and served with maple syrup and smoky tangy spice rub.

Hasselback potatoes might seem like they need more work than your regular potato-based creations, but they are totally worth the effort. And with this smoky and salty spice rub to give it that flavor, you just can’t go wrong.

Here’s everything you need to know about making them, and more.

Hasselback potatoes get their unique texture and taste from thinly slicing the potatoes. Cut thin slices down the top of your potatoes taking care not to cut all the way through the bottom of the potatoes.

Showing soft inside and crispy outside texture of fan shaped cut sweet potatoes.

    How to Cut Hasselback Potatoes?

Making fan like cuts for Hasselback potatoes might seem difficult. But let me assure you. It is not. Here are some simple tips to make it easy for you to do. Once you master the technique, I am sure you will use it like a pro !

    • Use a sharp chef's knife or a good paring knife to cut the potatoes.
    • Do not peel the skin of the potatoes. It helps them hold together as well as crispy texture when roasted.
    • Use medium or large sized potatoes. They are easier to hold and cut compared to small baby potatoes.
Place the potato between two chopsticks or long handed spoons before cutting. This ensures that the knife stops at the chopstick level and doesn't cut through the bottom.
    • Start cutting slices roughly 1 centimeter apart. Leave some space on both ends to hold them together.
    • And in case you make a mistake and cut through the bottom, do NOT discard the potatoes. They taste just as amazing.

This recipe gives you the best of both worlds with potatoes that are crispy on top and tender on the bottom.  Crispy top thin fan-like slices make it look like magazine worthy food. Not only do they taste great but they add a “wow” factor to any party, get together or dinner.

We love Sweet Potatoes in my family. Instant Pot Sweet Potatoes is my favorite way to cook them. Sweet Potato Chocolate Brownies , Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges and Savory Sweet Potato Breakfast Hash are our favorite recipes.

    What is Hasselbeck potatoes?

Per Wikipedia, a chef in Stockholm invented and popularized Hasselback potatoes. In his restaurant named Hasselbacken, in Stockholm Sweden, back in the 1950s he invented to cut the potatoes in fan like shape. The recipe became popular and took off worldwide because it looks pretty fancy and impressive to serve !

    Recipe Inspiration

I have eaten these cute Hasselback Potatoes at fancy restaurants in New York. They look so gourmet and full of artistic style. SO I wanted to learn and make them at home. Once I realized how easy it is to make them, I had to make a recipe with it to share with you all.

Beautifully roasted and garnished sweet potatoes served on the plate.

    Ingredients

You’ll need just a few simple ingredients to make the Hasselback potatoes. I am keeping simple seasoning mix however, feel free to choose your favorite.

Sweet Potatoes : 4 medium sweet potatoes. Since we do not peel the skin, choose clean and blemish free potatoes.
Butter or Oil : 2 tablespoons oil or butter. Use vegan or plant based butter to keep the recipe vegan. We use 1 tablespoon for preparation and 1 for basting.
Seasoning : 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice,  ⅛ teaspoon smoked paprika, ¼ cup maple syrup. Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Optional Garnishes : Dried parsley, rosemary, or thyme , sea salt crystals, dark brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg or use any of your favorite seasoning. Some pecans on the top are wonderful too.

How to Make Air Fryer Hasselback Sweet Potatoes

    1. Wash and scrub the sweet potatoes; pat them dry with a paper towel.
    2. Carefully slice each sweet potato ⅛-inch slits (or slices) along the tops, stopping ½-inch from the bottom (1 centimeter). Be careful not to apply too much pressure or you may cut straight through.
    3. Drizzle some olive oil over the cut sweet potatoes.
    4. Prepare the basting oil mixture by whisking together oil, smoked paprika, lemon juice, and maple syrup in a small bowl.
    5. Place sweet potatoes on an air fryer rack or basket in single layer, making sure to leave some space between them and not stacking them.
    6. Cook at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 18 minutes (depending on the size of your sweet potatoes), flipping over halfway through the cooking time.
    7. Once the potatoes are fork-tender, remove them from the air-fryer. Brush the oil-smoked paprika-lemon-maple syrup mixture on each sweet potato. Make sure to coat well the inside of the cut sweet potato.
    8. Serve warm with desired garnishes. Enjoy.

Baking Hasselback Sweet Potatoes in the Oven

Don’t have an Air fryer, no worries at all. You can make these Sweet Potatoes in the oven too. Place potatoes in a single layer, cut side up, onto the prepared baking dish, and bake for 40-50 minutes at 375 degree Fahrenheit pre heated oven.

If Using Instant Pot Air Fryer Lid or Crisp Lid

Arrange cut and prepared sweet potatoes in a single layer on the basket. Place the basket on the trivet. Cover and secure the Instant Pot with air fryer lid. ( or crisp lid)

Air fry at 375 Fahrenheit ( 190 Celsius) for 15 minutes until the potatoes look wrinkled and start turning golden brown.

    To make it quicker

Microwave - Wrap each sweet potato in one sheet of paper towel; place on a microwave-safe dish and microwave on a high setting for 5-7 minutes. Then continue in air fryer for 10 minutes. This allows them to crisp up well and saves 10 minutes.

Instant Pot - Place 1 cup of water in Instant Pot Liner. Put a steamer basket or a trivet in the liner. Arrange Sweet Potatoes over it. Close the lid and cook for 8 minutes. After it is done cooking, remove and continue to air fry for 5 minutes .

    How to Store the Leftovers?

Your leftover Hasselback sweet potatoes can stay good in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Just cover them up with foil or store them in an airtight container. Then, when you want to have them, just reheat them in the oven for 5-7 minutes.

    Pro Tips

    • Make sure you wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly before you use them for the recipe. After all, you’ll be eating the skin too.
    • To make sure the potatoes have that nice, crispy exterior that you are looking for, get them to dry completely before you baste them with butter or olive oil.
    • If the potatoes seem wobbly while you are trying to slice into them, you can chop off a small area from the back, to help them lie down flat on the chopping board or the surface you are working with.
    • It is always best to choose potatoes that have a similar size, so that they all end up cooking at the same time, and are cooked through.
    • To keep the potato steady while carefully slicing into it, use two chopsticks on either side.
    • Remember to season the potatoes with kosher salt and black pepper before you put them into the oven or the air fryer. Sprinkle rest of the seasoning only after roasting.
    • To make these potatoes taste even better, you can sprinkle some parmesan cheese over the top, right before you serve.
    • The maple syrup helps balance out the saltiness and the spiciness of the potatoes. If you don’t have maple syrup, you can make do with honey or brown sugar as well.
    • To make these potatoes cheesy, you can stuff each sliced portion of the potatoes with grated cheese, and then bake them.

    Serving Ideas & Suggestions

These Hasselback potatoes are lightly spiced and can be paired with anything from your casseroles and stews to your protein roasts and holiday mains- they are super versatile that way. You can serve them with a dip, or enjoy them as is.

If you put skewers either side of the sweet potato before cutting you won't cut threw to the bottom
