    • 📖 Recipe

Hasselback Potatoes are a creative way to make crispy potatoes. These potatoes are air fried or baked, and they get their crispy edges from the natural cuts. This method produces a crispy skin and fluffy spud inside.

A method for making thin, evenly sized slices of potatoes, which is easy and fun to do. These potatoes are very tasty and look so elegant. Similar to Air Fryer Hasselback Sweet Potatoes, use them as a gourmet appetizer, side dish or snack.

    What is Hasselback Potatoes?

Per Wikipedia article, a chef in Stockholm invented and popularized Hasselback potatoes. In his restaurant named Hasselbacken, in Stockholm Sweden, back in the 1950s he invented cutting the potatoes in fan-like shape. The recipe became popular and took off worldwide because it looks pretty fancy and impressive to serve !

    Recipe Inspiration

We have eaten these cute Hasselback Potatoes at fancy restaurants in New York and since then fall in love with these gourmet and full of artistic style potato sides, SO I wanted to learn and make them at home. Once I realized how easy it is to make them, I had to make a recipe with it to share with you all.

Air fryer hasselback potatoes served with dips.

    Ingredients

You’ll need just a few simple ingredients to make the Hasselback potatoes. I am keeping simple seasoning mix however, feel free to choose your favorite.

Potatoes : 3-4 medium potatoes. Since we do not peel the skin, choose clean and blemish free potatoes. You can use any kind of potatoes like Russet, Yellow, White or Idaho.

Butter or Oil : 2 tablespoons oil or butter. I have used each 1 tablespoon. Use vegan or plant based butter to keep the recipe vegan. We use 1 tablespoon for preparation and 1 for basting.

Garlic: 2 – 3 garlic pods, coarsely cut or minced. You can also use dry garlic powder or garlic salt.

Seasoning : Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, chili flakes (optional)

Optional Garnishes : Dried parsley or thyme , sea salt crystals, dried basil, Italian seasoning, Cajun seasoning or use any of your favorite seasoning.

Ingredients used in making this air fryer potato recipe.

How to make Air Fryer Hasselback Potatoes?

    1. Cut the Potatoes: Wash and scrub the potatoes; pat them dry with a paper towel. Carefully slice each potato ⅛-inch or smaller slits (or slices) along the tops, stopping ½-inch from the bottom (1 centimeter). Be careful not to apply too much pressure or you may cut straight through.
    2. Prepare the Seasoning : Prepare the basting oil mixture by whisking together oil, butter, minced garlic, salt, pepper and chili flakes. Brush with half of the mixture over the cut potatoes. Keep half of the mixture.
    3. Air Fryer or Bake : Place potatoes on an air fryer rack or basket in single layer, making sure to leave some space between them and not stacking them. Cook at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 18-20 minutes (depending on the size of your potatoes), brushing with oil + butter mixture halfway through the cooking time. Make sure to coat inside of the potatoes as well, carefully.
    4. Serve : Once the potatoes are fork-tender, remove them from the air-fryer. Make sure to season it well after taste test. Serve warm with desired garnishes. Enjoy.

How to make Baked Hasselback Potatoes in Oven

Don’t have an Air fryer, no worries at all. You can make these delicious Potatoes in the oven too. Place potatoes in a single layer, cut side up, onto the prepared baking sheet, and bake for 45-55 minutes at 375 degree Fahrenheit pre heated oven.

    How to Store Leftovers?

Your leftover Hasselback potatoes can stay good in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Just cover them up with foil or store them in an airtight container. Then, when you want to have them, just reheat them in the oven for 5-7 minutes.

    Pro Tips

    • Since the skin of potatoes will also be consumed, make sure you wash the potatoes thoroughly before you use them for the recipe.
    • To make sure the potatoes have that nice, crispy exterior that you are looking for, dry completely before you baste them with butter and/or olive oil.
    • If the potatoes seem wobbly while you are trying to slice into them, you can chop off a small area from the back, to help them lie down flat on the chopping board or the surface you are working with.
    • It is always best to choose potatoes that have a similar size, so that they all end up cooking at the same time, and are cooked through.
    • To keep the potato steady while carefully slicing into it, use two chopsticks on either side.
    • Remember to season the potatoes properly with kosher salt and black pepper and flakes before you put them into the oven or the air fryer and once in the middle of cooking time. Sprinkle rest of the seasoning only after roasting after tasting.
    • To make these potatoes taste even better, you can sprinkle some parmesan cheese over the top, right before you serve.
    • To make these potatoes cheesy, you can stuff each sliced portion of the potatoes with grated cheese, and then bake them.

    Serving Suggestions

These Hasselback potatoes are salty and garlicky and can be paired with anything from your casseroles and stews to your protein roasts and holiday mains- they are super versatile that way. You can serve them with a dip, or enjoy them as is.

    How to Cut Hasselback Potatoes?

Making fan-like cuts for Hasselback potatoes might seem difficult. But let me assure you. It is not. We have given some simple tips to make it easy for you. Once you master the technique, I am sure you will use it like a pro like us!!

Use a sharp chef’s knife or a good paring knife to cut the potatoes.

Do not peel the skin of the potatoes. It helps them hold together as well as crispy texture when roasted.

Use medium or large sized potatoes. They are easier to hold and cut compared to small baby potatoes.

Place the potato between two chopsticks or long handed spoons before cutting. This ensures that the knife stops at the chopstick level and doesn’t cut through the bottom.

Start cutting slices roughly 1 centimeter apart. Leave some space on both ends to hold them together.

And in case you make a mistake and cut through the bottom, do NOT discard the potatoes. They taste just as amazing.

Crispy top thin fan-like slices make it look like magazine worthy food. Not only do they taste great but they add a “wow” factor to any party, get together or dinner.
