Roasted asparagus beautifully as a side dish with variety of different meals. It works well from grilled entrées to comfort food classics.
I often roast it with just olive oil, lemon juice, some roughly chopped garlic, salt and pepper. However you can add extra flavors by using dry rubs or seasoning mixes.
I am including few of my favorite seasoning suggestions to make it extra flavorful.
Ingredients
Fresh and tender asparagus,
Olive oil or cooking spray ( skip if you want to make it WFPB oil free)
roughly chopped garlic,
salt and pepper.
Fresh lemon juice to drizzle on top and
optional red pepper flakes if you want a hint of spice.
How to Choose Air Frying Time
Adjust cooking time accordingly based on the thickness of the asparagus.
During non peak season , asparagus sticks tend be very thin. That type will require less air frying. Whereas in season asparagus can be meaty ad thick. It will require extra five minutes of air frying time.
So choose the timing based on the firmness and thickness of the stalks.
How to Prepare Asparagus for Air Frying
Start of by chopping roughly â…“ of the bottom end of stalks. This part of the stalk is often whitish in color and is very fibrous and woody. Use just the green part of the stalk and the spears. ( You can save the end of the stalk to make homemade vegetable broth)
Asparagus needs to thoroughly washed in cold tap water before using. Many times you find fine sand stuck in the fins of the stalk. So put it in colander and run it under cold water.
Then pat it dry with a paper or kitchen towel to remove excess moisture. Make sure to remove as much excess moisture as possible. It will help with quick cooking and crisp texture.
Flavor Suggestions
I love the nutty earthy flavors of asparagus as is so just salt, pepper and drizzle of lemon juice is what I typically use.
However, to enhance the flavors further, variety of seasoning can be used. Here are some options.
- Smoked paprika and lime
- Everything but bagel seasoning
- Italian Seasoning
- Onion and Garlic Salt
- Parmesan cheese – for crisp and salty texture
- Flavored breadcrumbs
- Dried herbs
- Coconut Amino, soy sauce or tamari
- Toasted sesame seeds
Instructions
Put Washed and dried asparagus on the plate. Drizzle olive oil, add garlic pieces and season with salt and pepper. Make sure to coat the asparagus well.
Place the seasoned asparagus on the air fryer basket.
Air Fry at 380°Fahrenheit for 7-10 minutes, depending on thickness. Half way through cooking shake and turn asparagus for even cooking.
When asparagus looks slightly charred and browned, remove from air fryer. Drizzle fresh lemon juice over it. Add red pepper flakes and other garnishes if using. Serve warm and enjoy !
You can serve roasted air fryer asparagus as an appetizer. It tastes amazing if you serve it along with Avocado Cilantro Lime Dip, Creamy Hummus or Greek Tzatziki Sauce.
