Eating stuffed jalapeño poppers is an utterly addictive culinary experience. These cheesy poppers are crispy golden brown outside with creamy, velvety center.
The cream cheese offers a luscious, tangy richness, complemented by the sharp, robust notes of cheddar cheese. Then, a subtle warmth emerges, a gentle heat that tingles the taste buds, courtesy of the jalapeño itself. This delightful contrast is so addictive, I can’t get enough of it.
We love these little spicy bites for game day snack and tailgate parties. These jalapeno bites are my favorite to serve as a finger food for picnics, potlucks, and outdoor parties. My family loves them as a movie night snack as well social cocktail nights.
Ingredients
Jalapeño Peppers: These are medium-sized chili peppers with medium heat. They add a spicy kick to the poppers. Removing the seeds and membranes can reduce their spiciness.
Cream Cheese: Provides a rich and smooth texture. Use room temperature
Sharp Cheddar Cheese: A sharp, flavorful cheese that complements the creaminess of the cream cheese. It’s often mixed with cream cheese to add extra cheesy goodness.
Breadcrumbs: These provide a crunchy texture. I prefer to use panko bread crumbs for their airy feel.
Optional Seasoning : For more rich and earthy flavors, add teaspoon garlic powder, onion powder or all purpose seasoning.
Oil Spray : This jalapeno poppers recipe is made in air fryer or oven. So I use cooking oil spray instead of deep frying. This is optional.
How To Make
Prep the Jalapeños:
Wash and dry the jalapeño peppers. Cut off the tops and slice them in half lengthwise. Remove the seeds and membranes.
Make the Cream Cheese Filling:
In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, bread crumbs, seasoning and shredded cheddar cheese. Mix until well combined.
Stuff the Peppers:
Spoon the tablespoon of cream cheese mixture into each jalapeno half, filling them generously. Spray the poppers lightly with cooking oil spray.
How to bake jalapeno poppers in the oven : Pre-heat oven to 350 degree Fahrenheit (175°C) . Arrange the stuffed jalapeño poppers in the single layer on the aluminum foil or parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake for about 12-15 minutes, or until they’re golden brown and the filling is heated through.
How to Make Air Fryer Jalapeno Poppers : Choose 350 degree Fahrenheit (175°C) . Arrange the stuffed jalapeño poppers in the single layer on the air fryer basket. I prefer to use basket liner for easier clean up. Air fry for about 8-12 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
Serve Warm:
Allow them to cool slightly before serving. They’re best enjoyed while they’re still warm. Offer a variety of dipping sauces like ranch dressing, salsa, or a spicy aioli to complement the flavors. Enjoy !!
Note: Cooking times may vary depending on the model and brand of your air fryer, so keep an eye on them to prevent overcooking.
Storage Tips for Jalapeno Poppers
Refrigeration: If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They should be consumed within 2-3 days for optimal taste.
Freezing (Uncooked): You can freeze uncooked jalapeño poppers for later use. Arrange them on a baking sheet and freeze until solid, then transfer to an airtight container or freezer bag. When ready to cook, there’s no need to thaw; just adjust cooking time as needed.
Freezing (Cooked): To freeze, allow them to cool completely, then arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet. Once frozen, transfer to an airtight container or freezer bag.
Pro Tips
- Handle Jalapeños with Care: Wear gloves when handling jalapeños, especially if you’re sensitive to capsaicin (the compound that makes peppers spicy). Avoid touching your face or eyes after handling them.
- Adjust Spice Level: To control the heat, remove the seeds and membranes for milder poppers. If you prefer them spicier, leave some or all of the seeds and membranes intact.
- Use Cooking Spray: Spraying the poppers lightly with cooking oil before air frying can help achieve a crispy, golden exterior.
- Arrange Poppers Evenly: Place the poppers in a single layer in the air fryer basket or baking sheet. Avoid overcrowding to ensure even cooking.
Recipe FAQs
The majority of a jalapeno’s heat comes from the seeds and membranes. Remove them before stuffing to lower the spice level. You can also soak them in water before stuffing. It can help dilute some of the capsaicin, the compound responsible for spiciness.
